Most Asian markets rose Tuesday, with Japanese stocks climbing as hopes that the country would soon see an end to deflation spurred buying of real estate developers, retailers and banks.

The Nikkei 225 index rose 249.78 points, or 1.62%, to finish at 15641.26 points on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. On Monday, the index gained 218.41 points, or 1.44%.

Tuesday's gains followed a Japanese government announcement the preceding day that the chance of Japan escaping deflation - a continual fall in prices - will grow in the next fiscal year.

Consumer prices in Japan have generally been falling for years, eroding corporate profits and paychecks.

The government said that Japan's gross domestic product deflator, which widely reflects consumer prices, is expected to rise 0.1% in fiscal 2006 after declining for eight straight years.

There was brisk buying in the real estate sector Tuesday after a Nihon Keizai report that Mori Trust, a Japanese developer, plans to sell a massive redevelopment property in central Tokyo to U.S. insurer AIG for over Y400 billion.

The mood was also buoyed by a rise in Internet service providers Yahoo Japan Corp. and Softbank Corp., both popular among retail investors, as well as strong appetite for IPO issues, one trader said.
