Perhaps the best-known and most insightful analysis of the speculative determination of stock market prices can be found in Keynes' General Theory (Keynes, 1936, Chapter 12). Keynes identifies two features of the stock market that lead to speculative behaviour. The first of these is the uncertainty of the future.
