Global Chip Revenue Rises in November
Online staff -- Electronic News, 30/12/2002
Global semiconductor sales reached $12.7 billion in November, a 1.3 percent sequential increase from the $12.5 billion reported in October, the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA) said today.
Sales in the Americas and Japan actually shrunk slightly in November, 0.8 percent and 0.6 percent, respectively. But Europe grew by 5.8 percent sequentially, with sales growing to $2.6 billion. Asia Pacific also saw growth of 1.3 percent to $4.6 billion.
The growth in November continued a trend that began in Q4 of last year, according to the SIA. November sales were up 19.6 percent from November 2001 sales of $10.6 billion.
"The November sales of the global chip industry underscores the healthy recovery that has been building momentum through out this year," George Scalise, SIA president, said in a statement. "The wireless sector continues to be the strongest single market."
Flash and digital signal processors benefited from the strong wireless market. Flash was up 6.6 percent while DSPs were up 3.7 percent in November. Wi-Fi has also begun to contribute to the strength of this market, the SIA said.
The computer chip segment also apparently benefited from holiday sales. MPUs were up 0.5 percent while DRAM was up 5.8 percent thanks in no small part to improved pricing.
The SIA's Global Sales Report is a three-month moving average of sales activity. The GSR is tabulated by the World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) organization, which represents approximately 66 companies. The moving average is a mathematical smoothing technique that mitigates variations due to companies' monthly financial calendars
