NEW YORK (AFX) - Authors of a study are recommending that British drugmaker
GlaxoSmithKline develop its Tykerb drug for possible use in the early treatment
of breast cancer.
The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, uses previously
released data from a Phase III clinical trial of the drug. The clinical trial
showed that Tykerb in combination with the chemotherapy drug Xeloda delayed
tumor growth for twice as much time when compared to treatment with Xeloda
alone.
The study ended in March, earlier than expected, because of the drug
candidate's success.
Tykerb is under FDA review for the treatment of advanced breast cancer. It
was given "Fast-Track" status in September, allowing for a faster review.
GlaxoSmithKline PLC also is seeking approval for the drug in the European
Union and Switzerland.
