Zengas et al, do you know of in-situ technology that can be used to convert the anthracite to methane. There must be a bio method for this. Anaerobic bacteria should do the trick. I guess that if it was well established and efficient we would know about it already.
Failing that, perhaps we could widen the hole and lower a couple of cows in. They convert carbon to methane don't they? Small glitch, may need a source of hydrogen. Would pouring water down the hole do the job? !
