Darkie Day
On Boxing Day and New Year's Day, it is an old tradition for some residents of Padstow to don blackface and parade through the town singing minstrel songs. The origin of this custom, called "Darkie Day" is unknown, although local legend links it to the freedom given to the occupants of passing slave ships on these two days. Recent controversy has brought Darkie Day to national attention, although much of this is fuelled by ignorance. Although "outsiders" have linked the day with racism, Padstonian's insist that this is not the meaning of the day. The day has now been renamed mummer's day to avoid any unintended offence.[6]
