Mobile penetration reached 100% for the first time in September, the latest quarterly report from ComReg on the Irish electronics communications sector shows. The Commission for Communications Regulation's report for the third quarter of 2005 says that there were 4.05 million mobile subscribers nationally in September.
A previously published ComReg survey suggested that as many as 7% of mobile users have more than one active mobile subscription.
The report on the three months to the end of September also reveals that 390,000 mobile users have switched mobile operator while keeping their mobile number since the launch of Mobile Number Portability in June 2003.
It also reveals that Irish mobile subscribers sent over one billion text messages and over six million multi-media messages in the quarter.
Today's report shows that in the three months to the end of September, there was a 19% increase in the number of broadband subscriptions and the growth rate in such subscriptions over the last 12 months was a huge 229%.
The report shows that as of September, there was a total of 208,500 broadband subscribers in Ireland, with DSL still the most predominant technology platform for broadband access. Non-DSL broadband subscriptions using fixed wireless, cable or satellite broadband represent 21% of all broadband subscriptions.
The ComReg report also says that overall revenue generated in the electronic communications sector in the third quarter totalled €1.01 billion.
