THE jatropha tree, which can be used for soap and bio-diesel, could boost the country's economy, the Minister of Environment and Tourism Minister, Cde Francis Nhema, has said.
He urged Zimbabweans to invest in jatropha tree production to promote economic growth and said his ministry has a target of planting two million jatropha seedlings, adding that 36 million trees have been planted countrywide since 1980.
Addressing a Press conference in Harare, Cde Nhema said: "Seeds from the plant have 35-40 percent non-edible oil which is suitable mainly for soap and bio-diesel. Various parts of the plant are of medicinal value, its bark contains tannin, which can be used for dying cloth. Thus, the growing of jatropha can be a means of economic empowerment and social uplifting and poverty alleviation," said the minister.
