D1 Oils - Charts, News and Discussion
LBO - Wed, 14 Dec 05 :
In spite of all the political noises and the poisoned air of partisan politics polluting the environment, there’s the energy sector we can bet on to push the country forward.
It’s the next new thing in the race for alternative energy sources and the Philippine National Oil Co.-Energy Development Corp. (PNOC-EDC) is placing a wager on Jatropha cuncas, marking the geothermal development firm’s latest segue into bio-fuels, which could well be the future of energy.
In a deal inked by PNOC-EDC’s Paul Aquino with the Decong-cogon Producers Cooperative Marketing Association and D1 Oils Asia Pacific last month, P18 million was allocated to test the conditions for the propagation of jatropha in a 5-hectare nursery plantation in Kabangkalan City, Negros. Jatropha’s 37 percent oil content is a known substitute for diesel fuel. Its seeds can actually be combusted as a fuel without being refined. Its oil has already passed tests performed on diesel engines.
Called “tuba-tuba” or “kasia,” the jatropha is a hardy hedge customarily found on church grounds, having been grown there by the “frailes” of old to discourage farm animals from foraging too close to the faithful.
PNOC-EDC’s partners here are a cooperative of some 9,600 farmhands of a once prosperous hacienda and sugar mill, and DI Oils, a subsidiary of D1 Oils Plc, United Kingdom, a company committed to the reduction of global reliance on hydrocarbons through the production of bio-fuels.
