COSALT - any views ?
jeffian - Thu, 20 Oct 05 :
I think (but not sure) that Ross's family were involved with Cosalt historically. Very rich men can afford a bit of sentiment! I held CSLT very profitably for several years as a High div yield/low PER play but it was never going to set the world alight as a company. It is a mishmash of disparate businesses - caravans, work clothing, fishing nets, ropes, electrical lighting, safety gear and even property development when I held - which they dearly wanted to rationalise but the cyclical caravan business was the tail wagging the dog and they couldn't find anything to produce anywhere near the same profits if they sold it. There is nothing wrong with unexciting low-tech, low growth companies paying high divis so long as they at least maintain, and preferably grow, profits and keep the divi covered. CSLT are doing neither at the moment and I doubt they can until the caravan business turns back into an 'up' cycle.
Regards, Ian
