Nucor Corp., the second-biggest U.S. steelmaker, added $2.05 to $67.60. Allegheny Technologies Inc., a maker of specialty metals, rose 78 cents to $34.84. A gauge of material companies was up 1.6 percent for the best performance in the S&P 500 among 10 industry groups.

A Morgan Stanley report showed that global shortfalls of nickel, copper and other base metals will remain until at least 2007 because of environmental restrictions and other costs.
