Arcelor Agrees to Buy 20% Stake in Turkey's Erdemir (Update2)
Dec. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Arcelor SA, the world's No. 2 steelmaker, agreed to buy a 20 percent holding in Eregli Demir & Celik Fabrikalari TAS, three months after it lost an auction for a controlling stake in the Turkish steel producer.
Ordu Yardimlasma Kurumu, the Turkish military's pension fund, bought a 49 percent stake in the Turkish steelmaker, known as Erdemir for $2.96 billion. Arcelor is buying 41 percent of the company acquiring the 49 percent stake in Erdemir, the Turkish government's asset sale agency said in a statement today, without giving a value for the transaction.
``It's increasing their foothold in eastern Europe, which is an area they've always wanted to expand into,'' Stephen Pope, head of equity research at Cantor Fitzgerald LP in London, said in an interview today.
A stake in Erdemir gives Arcelor access to an expanding domestic market and an export hub that straddles Europe and the Middle East. The company, based in Karadeniz Ereglisi on the Black Sea coast, produced about 3.6 million metric tons of steel last year and sells to companies including Ford Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. in Turkey.
Arcelor spokesman Luc Scheer wasn't immediately able to comment on the statement from the Turkish government.
Arcelor's shares rose 7 cents, or 0.3 percent, to 21.25 euros ($25.21) as of 9:43 a.m. in Paris. Erdemir's shares rose as much as 25 kurus, or 2.9 percent, to 9 liras ($6.67) in Istanbul. The stock has risen 47 percent this year.
