north6,
Total longs will always equal total shorts = Open Interest.
On the 11th Oct there were 458,416 contracts (100oz) open (open interest).
For each contract there must be a long side (buyer) and a short side (seller).
Total Long (390,122) + Non-reportable Longs (68,294) = 458,416
Total Short (428,525) + Non-reportable Shorts (29,890) = 458,415 (they have lost one!!)
So QED - it balances! It always will, because they are contracts between 2 parties.
Probably does not help re CEY position - but I thought the article was misleading as it inferred that there were more buyers than sellers.
If you want to know more let me know as I may be able to dig up a useful link.
