London tube New Year's Eve strike to proceed after failed talks - RMT
LONDON (AFX) - London Underground staff are pressing ahead with their
24-hour New Year's Eve strike after talks with management failed.
Talks with conciliation service Acas broke down after Tube officials
rejected a compromise arrangement by the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT)
union over planned changes in staffing levels due to take effect in February.
"We offered to suspend the strike action if they suspend the introduction of
new rosters that have not been safety validated," said an RMT spokesman.
The LU bosses, however, "flatly" rejected the offer, he said, adding that
"there's no point going back to the negotiating table" at this stage.
"The ball is now very firmly in their court," he stressed.
Over 4,000 Tube workers are to walk out by noon on Dec 31, and then on Jan 8
in a row over LU's plans, which the RMT fears could lead to staff cuts and
compromise safety. LU, however, insisted there will be no job cuts, but a
redeployment of staff.
