U.S.: Not everyone is battening down the hatches due to the inverted
yield curve. A recent NYPost report notes the Iron Horse Vineyards
Bubbly Index, which maintains that when sparkling wines and champagne
sales rise markedly, the US economy tends to do well also. Sparkling
wines sales are up 7% in 2005, with some vineyards posting 10% increases
over last year, the Post notes. Also, the latest UBS/Gallup poll,
released Tuesday, shows that their index of Investor Optimism rose to 79
in December, compared to 50 in November and 34 in Sept. The index saw a
high of 82 last February. "Sixty-four percent of investors say now is a
good time to invest in the financial markets, up 8 points from last
month and the highest since December of last year," UBS says. This
optimism suggests a rosier U.S. economic outlook than some doom and
gloomers are forecasting, analysts say.
