European markets notch higher; Philips eases (PHG, FR:005447, FR:005257) By Sarah Turner
LONDON (MarketWatch) -- European markets gained on Wednesday amid strength in energy and metal shares, shrugging off a lower overnight close in Wall Street. Philips (PHG) shares also bucked the higher trend, declining 0.3% in early European trade after it said that it will take a 418 million euros charge to write off assets belonging to its LG.Philips displays joint venture. French video game makers Ubisoft (FR:005447) and Infogrames (FR:005257) were also lower, after U.S. video games maker Electronic Arts lowered its outlook overnight. The U.K. FTSE 100 index added 0.4% at 5,569, the French CAC-40 index gained 0.2% at 4,714 and the German DAX Xetra index gained 0.3% at 5,374.
