Unbundling? Anyone know what it's likely to entail? Surely BT will be financially compensated and their lines not just handed over?
Ofcom, the new media and telecoms regulator, will hold a formal investigation into BT Group PLC's dominance of telephone connections between homes and local exchanges, The Times reported citing an Ofcom spokesman.
The inquiry is to take place early this year, ahead of a review of the whole
UK telecoms market, and will examine whether the stalled process of "unbundling"
BT's local connections can be restarted.
"We will want to see whether there is scope for fair and effective
competition in this area, and how we can develop the best outcome for
consumers," an Ofcom spokesman is reported as saying. An unfavourable review would leave BT at risk of having its local network
dismembered as rivals slowly take control of its residential lines, the article
added.
