they may be actually trying to avoid impact, and hence hot money. with overall volumes tailing off across the board, a positive rns today (or any time before the new year) would lead to a huge rise in the sp and be followed by an inevitable big drop in the sp. RT and DF might prefer a steadier rise, in which case the only option, as I see it, would be to issue the rns after close of trading on 30/12. This would give everyone a few days to consider the news and thus damp down likely volatility and also, any increase in the sp would go into 2006's figures, which might have advantages to some (e.g. any funds that hold the stock).
But we must remember that all of this speculation is caused by RT saying that he would update the market before year end. LTHs have been bitten by overoptimistic director's forecasts before: he must know not to say anything that he cannot deliver upon.
