If there were only 200,000 end users for a blockbuster drug then that would mean each year it would cost the end user at least £5,000 if we are meant to believe that a blockbuster means sales exceeding £1 billion. Am i missing something??? Can't believe there are drugs out there which are that expensive!!!! I can't see one machine going that far and am sure that more will have to be produced to support 4 ttps.
Yes, incredible as it is, there are drugs out there that are that expensive.
For example,
“Complex large molecules such as interleukins and interferons that are now used as drugs are extremely expensive. Their production, shipment, and administration to patients are very complex processes. They have short storage lives and often must be given through intravenous infusion. Some biologics sell for $50,000 per month for therapies that might extend life by far less than year, Daemmrich says.”
And:
“All forms of recombinant erythropoeitin are expensive. A dialysis patient, who can expect to require lifelong EPO treatment, will pay up to $10,000 per year for the drug in the U.S. Cancer chemotherapy patients, who require EPO for shorter periods, pay about $1,000 per month in the U.S. Worldwide revenues for sales of EPO were over USD$10 billion in 2004”
