Frankie these are both minor gestures forced upon the government by environmental lobbies. In Germany there is NO tax on biofuel. 5% is a pathetic proportion to suggest, this is a fuel not an additive. 50% mix is fine for most vehicles and 90-100% even possible in some others. Also what's with the 'by 2010' lark? Why not 2007? Like BFC, the government have so far failed to meet their European set targets so 2011 is more likely the date. That is 6 more years holding BFC shares before we would see that demand. The share price has gone up slightly on Darling's announcement for instance but I can't see them revising the figures and timescale to create a more favourable scenario. This share SHOULD be an absolute winner, but our leaders are not as altruistic as us and they are too busy sourcing plutonium to devote any resources to vegetable fuel. The truth is they would rather we queued for miles to pay £5/litre for dwindling mineral oil before falling back on biofuel as a last resort.
This was the year when our government should have given biofuel GENUINE support as I say, and there does not appear to be an ongoing support policy now they have given us a token gesture.
I will give you an example of government policy. My great uncle was a talented engineer and inventor. During WWII he came up with the idea of tank trenches with one sloping and one vertical side and developed the machine to dig them. It proved successful and was widely adopted by the military. After the war he could see the start of the decline of steam locomotives and set to work designing an alternative. His engine was gas turbine powered I think, and had approval by many engineers as being efficiently workable. He then spent many years trying to convince the government to take up his ideas which included a national road transport and energy policy. He corresponded with the Prime Minister and probably wrote to the King too, but already they had in mind to use oil for all their road and rail transport. He campaigned for decades to have his system adopted but the government had other plans which had nothing to do with efficiency or conservation. I'm not going to fall into the same trap he did by not reading the signs. As long as there is black gold to be traded and fought over, all other energy sources will be marginalised. Without the right climate, oil producing crops will not bear fruit.
