Yes ofex really only has about a 25 companies worth investing in but they are the real microcaps and from where ten baggers have frequently come. It's high risk high reward. Dot.com times saw some people make fortunes on a few companies
Probably about 30-40 people really know the market well - most congregate at unquoted.co.uk. It's therefore pretty easy to find the companies worth investing at a really early stage.
It is pretty hard to buy or sell in any size there. If for example you wanted 5 grands worth of sprue aegis buying in one hit would be very hard. Jenkins the market maker wouldn't deal with you or price you out. Also it might alert other watchers. But you could probably buy on 3 or 4 occasions over a two month period in smaller parcels. It costs you a bit more in dealing costs but is agreat way to accumulate. Similarly when youre small company really starts to deliver others drive the price up and you can offload in small parcels of say a grand at a time.
