You're absolutely right, and I share your obvious frustration at the often ill-informed and in some cases downright vindictive nature of some (I stress, some) of the posts here.
Everyone in retail operates jit delivery with the aim of turning stock around quickly and the whole focus of logistics in recent years has been to achieve this. 'Warehouses' are little more than staging posts, cross docking facilities. Nestle, for example, have a state of the art installation at Bardon in Leicestershire where product comes direct from factories e.g. in York; is consolidated and shipped out in full loads to retailers the next day. They don't have one standing empty in Scunthorpe 'just in case' ! Of course every sensible company has a disaster recovery plan, but you have to strike a balance in terms of risk assessment between managing the on-going business and managing risk.
ASOS has missed out on Christmas sales and that's a problem, no question about it. How big a problem depends on the details of insurance cover and how quickly they can get up and running again. But it's a one off. Given the stock turn in this business, the destroyed merchandise would virtually all have been out of the door by now anyway and the new stuff for Spring and Summer is arriving all the time. As long as they can get organised in the next few weeks, and I have every confidence in the management doing just that, this will in the scheme of things be nothing more than a temporary blip.
