It is at Hautajaervi where the real excitement is, and where a new uranium deposit, Energy Ridge, has been identified. Agricola announced that it had been awarded claims 1 - 7 at Hautajaervi two days after it announced the Kauhee claims, on 12th May. The initial seven claims, located in the municipality of Salla, Lappland County, covered an area of 63 square kilometres. However, following its new uranium discovery, the company acquired two further claims of 31 square kilometres, to take its total acreage at Hautajaervi to 94 square kilometres.
Given that Agricola only commenced work on the Hautajaervi claims on 2nd August 2005, progress has been rapid, and immensely successful. Initial exploration work involved ground scintillometer surveys and radon surveys being undertaken, with a uranium expert assessing the area. The first results from the uranium deposit, nicknamed Energy Ridge by investors, were released by the company on 19th September. The company believes that the deposit is of about 300 metres in length and 100 metres in width, as indicated by the scintillometer readings.
The average grade of uranium oxide from bedrock sampling was over 0.3%, with samples ranging up to 1.8% uranium oxide. Many of the bedrock samples sent to the Chemex Labs in Canada had to be dispatched in sealed containers due to their high radioactivity. Chemex was at first reluctant to accept the samples due to the high levels of radiation, but, after persuasion, agreed.
