LONDON (AFX) - Barclays PLC said Absa Bank Ltd, a wholly owned unit of South Africa's largest retail bank group Absa, agreed to buy the Barclays South African Branch Business for 578 mln rand (51.9 mln stg).

The business comprises the Barclays Capital South Africa business and the Corporate and Business Banking business as carried on by the South African branch of Barclays.

Barclays, which had a majority stake in the Absa group, now holds about 56 pct of Absa, it added.
