Warsaw Stock Exchange

Known in Polish as Giełda Papierów Wartościowych w Warszawie (or simply GPW), the Warsaw Stock Exchange is the main Polish stock exchange.

The exchange can trace its roots back to 1817 and the Warsaw Mercantile Exchange (Giełda Kupiecka w Warszawie in Polish) founded by the Grand Duke of Russia, Konstantin Pavlovich Romanov.

Polish exchanges closed in 1939 at the outbreak of World War II and remained closed for over 50 years, throughout the period of communist rule.

The exchange, in its current configuration, was founded on 12 April 1991, following the fall of the Soviet Union and the communist government in 1989.
