The name Pink Sheets stems from an earlier paper-based quotation service, which was printed on pink paper. It is mainly used by stock brokers trading in over-the-counter (OTC) securities.
Pink Sheets has a low clearance overhead and can potentially be listed on the NASDAQ OTCBB; making it very attractive to issuers.
