MCLEAN, Va., Nov. 14, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Gannett Co., Inc. (NYSE: GCI) announced today that Julie Moreno has been named president and publisher of the Tallahassee (FL) Democrat, effective Monday, Nov. 26. She formerly was North Carolina regional vice president for Freedom Communications and publisher of The Gaston Gazette in Gastonia, NC.

Moreno began her career with Freedom Communications in 1986 as an account executive at The Brownsville (TX) Herald. She rose through the ranks at The Brownsville Herald, eventually being named director of sales. She joined the Clovis (NM) News Journal as publisher in 1995 and was named senior publisher of Freedom Newspapers of New Mexico in 1997.
In 2000, she was named publisher of The Yuma (AZ) Sun and served as Pacific regional vice president from 2004 to 2010. She was publisher of the East Valley Tribune/Scottsdale Tribune in Mesa, AZ, from 2007 until 2010, and while there led the team that won a 2009 Pulitzer Prize for Local Reporting. She served as Freedom Communication's North Carolina regional vice president and publisher of The Gaston Gazette from 2010 to 2012, and served in a similar capacity during a transition period following the newspaper's acquisition by Halifax Media Group.
Moreno has led a number of professional organizations, serving as past president of the New Mexico Press Association and the Arizona Newspaper Association. She also served as past president of the Yuma (AZ) County and the Clovis/Curry County, NM, Chambers of Commerce and in various leadership positions at local community organizations.
Moreno earned her Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Missouri and her MBA from the University of Texas-Brownsville.
