AngloGold Lost 73,000 Oz Output In Past Year On Safety Stoppages

AngloGold Ashanti Ltd. (AU) lost 73,000 troy ounces of gold output in the last 12 months as a result of safety-related work stoppages in South Africa, the miner said Wednesday.

AngloGold is the latest miner to report a loss of output due to increased use of safety stoppages imposed by South Africa's Department of Mineral Resources.

This week Anglo American Platinum Ltd. (AMS.JO) said it lost 138,215 ounces of platinum as a result of a more than doubling in safety-related work stoppages in 2011.

Lonmin PLC (LMI.LN) said last week that in the past four months it lost 100 million rand ($13 million) a month of revenue as a result of government-mandated work stoppages at its South African platinum mines.

South Africa's department increased the safety stoppages following a bad start to 2011 which saw a rise in mine deaths and accidents.
