Carlyle Group's portfolio company Marle International, a France-based manufacturer of orthopedic implants, on Thursday said it has bought ATS-Sferic, a medical casting business.

Financial details of the transaction weren't disclosed.

The deal seals Marle's position as Europe's largest implant contract manufacturing business offering a complete range of orthopedic implant products and services across all major joints, including hips, knees and shoulders. The company sells to both large manufacturers, such as Zimmer Holdings Inc. (ZMH) and Biomet, and smaller vendors.

"With the acquisition of ATS-Sferic, we hope to build on our good reputation and expand the business into new areas of service and manufacture, and across new geographies," said Marle President Antonio Gil

"ATS-Sferic will help us in our vision of becoming the European leader in orthopedic contract manufacturing," he added.

Based in Ales, France ATS is the second-largest independent medical casting company in Europe with a workforce of 120. Sferic is a machining company servicing mostly orthopedic clients in France and Europe. Headquartered in Menars, France, the company has around 93 employees.

Carlyle Group bought Marle in 2009 as a growth capital investment from Carlyle Europe Technology Partners II Fund.
