BRUSSELS -(Dow Jones)- The European Union may bring a complaint against Argentina at the World Trade Organization over import tariffs the country has placed on a number of goods, a spokesman for the European Commission said Tuesday. The move comes as economic relations between the EU and Argentina have deteriorated sharply after Argentina moved last month to nationalize the oil and gas producer YPF SA (YPF), a unit of the Spanish firm Repsol YPF SA (REP.MC). A complaint from the commission, which is responsible for trade policy for the 27-nation EU, wouldn't directly challenge the nationalization of YPF but officials say the nationalization has focused attention on lingering objections governments have had to Argentina's trade policies. "We will be looking at all the possibilities, of which the multilateral response, including the WTO action, is certainly one we will be considering," commission spokesman John Clancy said Tuesday. -By Matthew Dalton; The Wall Street Journal; +32 (0)2 741 1487; matthew.dalton@wsj.com
