Washington Gas, a WGL company (NYSE: WGL), today announced that it surpassed a supplier diversity milestone, exceeding a target goal of awarding 25 percent of its non-gas supplier contracts to businesses owned by minorities, women and service-disabled veterans. In its annual progress report filed with the Maryland Public Service Commission (PSC) on July 21, 2016, Washington Gas reported that 26.3 percent of its contractor spend was directed to diverse suppliers in 2015.

In 2009, Washington Gas was one of 19 regulated utilities that pledged to award a quarter (25 percent) of contract spending to diverse businesses in a memorandum of understanding (MOU) supplier diversity agreement with the Maryland PSC.

“Diversity is a core value at Washington Gas because we know that it enhances our company and contributes to the equity of economic opportunities in the communities we serve,” said Melissa Adams, division head of Corporate Social Responsibility for Washington Gas. “We are proud of this milestone and will continue to expand the diversity of our leadership, employees, community programs, partners and supply chain.”

“Washington Gas is one of the most progressive members of the National Minority Supplier Development Council,” said Sharon R. Pinder, president and CEO of the Capital Region Minority Supplier Development Council. “Washington Gas has an innovative approach to supplier diversity and inclusion and it is reflected in their success and leadership in exceeding their goals with the Maryland Public Service Commission’s MOU.”
