At a formal ribbon cutting ceremony this morning in Frederick,
Md., Washington Gas celebrated the opening of the first of three
public fueling stations for compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicles.
The station, located at Washington Gas’ facility at 1800 N. Market
Street in Frederick, is owned by Washington Gas and will be
operated and maintained by Trillium CNG, a leading provider of CNG
fueling services for more than 20 years.
“Compressed natural gas is a clean, affordable alternative to
diesel fuel and gasoline, and this station marks an important step
in making CNG more accessible to both privately owned vehicles as
well as commercial fleets,” said Gautam Chandra, Senior Vice
President of Strategy, Business Development and Non-Utility
Operations for Washington Gas and its parent company, WGL. “In
addition to the environmental benefits, CNG vehicles also can offer
significant fuel savings and stability. We are proud to add this
CNG station to the spectrum of energy answers we offer at WGL.”
Currently in the United States, there are more than 150,000
natural gas vehicles operating on roadways with more than 100
different models of light, medium and heavy-duty vehicles available
to the public or to commercial fleets, according to NGVAmerica.
Natural gas vehicle engines are very similar to conventional
engines, but run quieter, and emit far fewer hydrocarbons, toxins
and greenhouse gases than vehicles that burn petroleum fuels. They
also produce 90% less airborne particulate matter, which is a
leading cause of respiratory diseases like asthma. In addition,
domestic natural gas supplies are abundant, with more than 99
percent of natural gas consumed in the U.S. produced in North
America, providing additional energy security.
Frederick County Executive, Jan Gardner, commented, “I applaud
Washington Gas for introducing the first publicly accessible
compressed natural gas fueling station in the county. Residents and
businesses will have access to a low cost vehicle fuel source that
is cheaper than regular gasoline or diesel and has many
environmental benefits compared to conventional motor fuels.
Frederick County Government has been on the cutting edge of
sustainability with our hybrid and electric vehicles, so we welcome
this new station as the next step in bringing increased
eco-friendliness to Frederick County residents, and we look forward
to more advancements for a greener future.”
The Frederick station will be open to the public 24 hours a day,
seven days a week and will accept all major credit and fuel cards.
Later this summer, Washington Gas and Trillium CNG will open a
second public CNG fueling station in Forestville, Md. A third
station is being planned for the District of Columbia.
