(AAPL) said it sold more than 1.7 million iPhone 4 smartphones within the first three days of the phone's launch, making it the most successful start for a product in the company's history. Its shares were up 3 cents at $266.73 in premarket trading. The latest iteration of the device - which launched three years ago to throngs of enthusiasts and has become the company's biggest business - went on sale in U.S. stores on Thursday. Apple said it took advance orders for more than 600,000 new iPhones worldwide on the first day it was available, the most ever taken by the company in a single day and 10 times higher than for the iPhone 3GS last year. Analysts have been expecting the new model to help Apple sell about 36 million iPhones in the fiscal year ending in September, up 73% from the prior fiscal year. Carrier AT&T Inc. (T) expected to start selling the phone in its stores Tuesday. Wal-Mart Stores Inc. (WMT) and Best Buy Co. (BBY) sell it now. -By Matt Jarzemsky, Dow Jones Newswires; 212-416-2240; matthew.jarzemsky@dowjones.com
