DALLAS, April 15, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon
Wireless deployed three cell on light trucks (COLTs), with both LTE
and XLTE coverage, and four macro sites to support one of the
largest races of the season at Fort
Worth's Texas Motor Speedway – the Duck Commander
500. Network engineers tested a new 12-beam spherical
antenna to enhance coverage and capacity for the more than 150,000
attendees at the race on April 10-11. Deployment of this high
capacity antenna was a first for Verizon in the Central Texas region.
"Racecar fans are power users of wireless technology, especially
before, during and after the race. They need to use data to look up
driver statistics and highlights on their devices, or share
pictures and videos," said Lee
Maschmann, executive director- Network for Central Texas at Verizon Wireless. "At events
such as this, we maximize capacity to support the increased weekend
usage for not only the fans, but for the drivers and their teams.
We want everyone to have a winning experience."
Preparation is the Key
The network team in
Central Texas began planning for
the Duck Commander 500 months ago. The team deployed 12
700MHz LTE, 18 Advanced Wireless Services (AWS) XLTE, nine Voice
and nine Evolution-Data Optimized (3G) sectors to enhance network
performance and increase capacity. The event attendees uses
up to 3.62 terabytes of data, and processed over 16 million
successful data connections at the race during April 10 – 11.
Verizon has made significant upgrades around the Speedway in the
past to prepare for substantial increases in voice and data
activity expected at weekend events. These enhancements mean
that more racecar fans, media and local residents can enjoy
high-speed 4G LTE data on their mobile devices without disruptions.
In 2014 alone, Verizon activated its XLTE technology in 16
markets across Central Texas,
boosting network capacity and speeds for customers.
