Valero Energy Corp. said Thursday that lighting struck a transformer used by its refinery in Texas City.

"There was a lightning strike this morning to a transformer that serves the refinery," the company said. "There has been flaring at the plant and refinery personnel are conducting fence line air monitoring."

The statement added that no impacts to the community are expected, but didn't indicate whether production at the refinery was affected.

The 245,000 barrel-a-day Texas City refinery is located 40 miles southeast of Houston.
