Facts About UPS Air Operations

A large United Parcel Service (UPS) cargo plane crashed early Wednesday near an airport in Birmingham, Ala. There was no immediate report on the condition of the pilot and co-pilot. Here are some facts about UPS' air operations from the company's website: Headquarters: Louisville, Ky. Number of employees: 20,047 Number of daily flights: 1,931 total, including 949 domestic and 982 international Number of UPS jet aircraft: 235, including 53 Airbus A300, the plane involved in the crash Wednesday. History: UPS purchased its first aircraft in 1981 and now calls itself "one of the world's largest airlines." UPS has been recognized for its safety and environmental record. About the A300: UPS added the Airbus aircraft to its fleet, in 2000. The plane has been lauded for its low emissions and fuel-efficient features, according to UPS. It has a maximum payload of up to 120,000 pounds. Past incidents: --In 2010, a UPS cargo plane crashed after takeoff near Dubai, killing two pilots in the company's first fatal aircraft accident. A report released last month said cargo containing lithium batteries started a fast-moving fire that caused the crash of the Boeing 747. --In 2006, a UPS plane--a McDonnell Douglas DC-8--burned after landing in Philadelphia. There were no major injuries, and the fire's cause was suspected to be "an in-flight cargo fire that initiated from an unknown source," according to the National Transportation Safety Board. -Compiled by George Stahl Subscribe to WSJ: http://online.wsj.com?mod=djnwires
