DALLAS—Patricia, the fiercest hurricane recorded in the region, fizzled over Mexico and limped into the U.S., causing more inconvenience than storm damage in Texas and Louisiana over the weekend.

In Texas, remnants of Patricia merged with another storm working its way across the state.

Weekend rain caused some street flooding around Houston, but by Sunday afternoon, Houston Mayor Annise Parker said in a tweet that "the storm has largely passed w/ minor problems." Harris County Flood Control District, which covers the area around Houston, said bayous and creeks were draining efficiently.

On Saturday, flooding caused a Union Pacific freight train to derail south of Dallas. No injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, heavy rain fell in Louisiana on Sunday, with tornado warnings issued for some areas.

The Mexican government lifted its storm alert late on Saturday and said no major damage was caused by the storm, which landed in a sparsely populated area of Jalisco state.

Thousands of tourists and residents had moved into shelters, and there were no reports of casualties. The tourist resorts of Manzanillo and Puerto Vallarta were spared a direct hit, as Patricia reached land late on Friday as a Category 5 hurricane, but broke up quickly over the Sierra Madre mountains.

The Mexican government estimated that between 3,000 and 3,500 homes were damaged, partially or totally, and around 8,750 acres of farmland were affected. State and federal authorities on Sunday continued taking stock of homes and infrastructure. Agriculture ministry staff were touring the region to assess damage.

The country's seaports, airports and highways were al functioning normally. Electricity was cut to around 235,000 users, of which half had service restored by late on Saturday, and the state-owned power utility estimated that service would be completely restored Monday.
