Brazil mobile phone subscriptions increased to 217.3 million in June, up 1.06% from May, according to figures released late Tuesday by telecommunications regulator Anatel.

New subscriptions totaled 2.3 million in June, down from 2.5 million new subscriptions in May, Anatel said. In June there were fewer cancelations of existing subscriptions than there were in May.

Telecomunicacoes de Sao Paulo SA (VIV, TLPP4.BR), or Vivo, maintained market leadership in June, with a 29.47% share of subscriptions. Vivo is controlled by Spain's Telefonica SA (TEF, TEF.MC).

Claro, the local unit of Mexico's America Movil SA (AMX, AMX.MX) and TIM Participacoes SA (TSU, TCSL4.BR), the local unit of Telecom Italia SpA (TI, TIT.MI), divided the second post with the same market shares of 25.55% each.

In fourth place is the mobile-phone operator Tele Norte Leste Participacoes SA (TNE, TNLP4.BR), or Oi, with a 19.1% share in June.
