Brazil mobile phone subscriptions increased to 210.5 million in March, up 1.42% from February, according to figures released late Wednesday by telecommunications regulator Anatel.

New subscriptions totaled 2.94 million in March, up from 2.4 million new subscriptions in February, Anatel said.

Vivo Participacoes SA (VIVO4.BR) maintained market leadership in March, with a 29.48% share of subscriptions, down from 29.55% seen in February. Vivo is controlled by Spain's Telefonica SA (TEF.MC).

Claro, the local unit of Mexico's America Movil SA (AMX.MX), was in the No. 2 position in February with a 25.38% market share, versus 25.47% posted in the previous month.

TIM Participacoes SA (TCSL4.BR) was in third place with 25.11%, down slightly from 25.16%. TIM is the local unit of Telecom Italia SpA (TIT.MI).

In fourth-place, mobile-phone operator Oi (TNLP4.BR) registered a share of 19.69% in March, compared with a share of 19.47% in February.
