Peg Perego Recalls 223,000 Strollers, Eight Years After Baby Death

By Kristin Jones Peg Perego USA Inc. is recalling 223,000 strollers sold at major national retailers due to safety risks, eight years after a six-month-old baby died of strangulation, consumer-safety officials said. A baby from Tarzana, Calif., was strangled after his head was trapped between the seat and tray of his Peg Perego stroller in 2004, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said. Three years later, a seven-month-old girl from New York, N.Y., was nearly strangled when her head became trapped in a similar way. The recall affects strollers that were sold at major children's stores including Toys "R" Us Inc.'s Babies R Us and Bed Bath & Beyond Inc.'s (BBBY) Buy Buy Baby between January 2004 and September 2010, at a price between $270 and $450. Babies--especially infants under a year old--who aren't harnessed in strollers can be trapped and strangled, as their heads or necks can be caught by the tray. The recall involves two older versions of the Peg Perego strollers, Venezia and Pliko-P3, that were manufactured between January 2004 and September 2007. They were made before a January 2008 voluntary industry standard that requires larger openings between a stroller's tray and the seat bottom. Only strollers with a single cup holder are affected by the recall. Strollers with a bumper bar in front of the baby or a tray with two cup holders aren't affected. Peg Perego is based in Fort Wayne, Ind., and the strollers were manufactured in Italy. The strollers may still be available second-hand, the CPSC said. Separately, the regulatory agency said Kolcraft Enterprises Inc., a Chicago company, is recalling about 5,600 dual-seat strollers because of fall and choking hazards. The recall affects the Contours Options LT Tandem Strollers, sold in black with red, or gray with yellow. The strollers were sold at Burlington Coat Factory, and online at Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and Target Corp. (TGT) websites and other retailers between February 2012 and July 2012 for around $250. No injuries have been reported, but the company received six reports of front wheels breaking, posing a risk of a child falling. Kolcraft also received two reports of screws and nuts in the stroller's basket coming loose, creating a risk of choking. The Kolcraft strollers were made in China. Earlier this year, Kolcraft recalled a different version of its Contours Options strollers because of a danger children's or adults' fingers could be amputated or lacerated. The company also recalled around 46,000 of its bassinets in May because of a fall hazard. Write to Kristin Jones at kristin.jones@dowjones.com Subscribe to WSJ: http://online.wsj.com?mod=djnwires
