AT&T Inc. reached an agreement with thousands of striking technicians and call-center workers in California and Nevada that will allow them to report to work on Thursday.

An AT&T spokesman said the strike has been resolved. He declined to detail what led to the settlement with the more than 15,000 workers, but said the company complies with the terms of its collective-bargaining agreements.

The Communications Workers of America said workers would be returning to scheduled shifts, and that AT&T "will no longer require technicians to perform work assignments outside of their expertise and classification." The dispute started over complaints about such assignments from technicians in San Diego and spread to other West Coast cities Wednesday.

The end to the walkout doesn't resolve ongoing disagreement over the Western landline workers' permanent contract, which lapsed last April. About 21,000 workers in AT&T's wireless business have also been negotiating with the company since their contract expired in February.
