RALEIGH, N.C., March 28, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- The world will
soon be more intimate and more connected for many senior adults in
Raleigh, thanks to a $33,000 contribution from the AT&T*
Foundation to support the city's Digital Connectors program.
The contribution was presented by Venessa Harrison, President of AT&T North
Carolina, today as Raleigh's first
gigabit-connected community center went online at the Tarboro Road
Community Center and Saint Monica Teen Center, launching a new wave
of high-speed Internet connectivity under the North Carolina Next
Generation Network initiative.
"Advanced technology has been the catalyst for change in our
world because of what it enables people to do," she said. "We are
excited to support the Digital Connectors program because, not only
is it connecting generations, but it is expanding horizons and
opening new opportunities for seniors and for the young adults who
are their instructors in this new digital world."
Launched in 2010, the Raleigh Digital Connectors program engages
young people, ages 14-21, in an intensive training program to help
participants learn skills for succeeding in the 21st
century workplace. Modules include leadership principles, coding,
gaming, financial literacy and civic journalism. Each Digital
Connector commits to 60 hours of community service, teaching
members of the community how to use computers and the Internet.
"Over the past five years, 103 Digital Connectors have helped
nearly 3,000 people become members of today's digital society,"
said Gail M. Roper, Chief
Information Officer of the City of
Raleigh and founder of Raleigh's Digital Connector program. "Through
this multigenerational approach, we have seen a sense of
understanding and appreciation grow between the Connectors and the
seniors whom they have taught. The program is helping build a
culture that embraces technology and civic engagement. We are
excited about the impact the program has already had in the
community and look forward to the difference it will make in the
future."
