PARIS--A drug to treat fleas and ticks in dogs developed by the animal-health unit of French pharmaceutical company Sanofi (SAN.FR) has been approved by the European Commission, the company said Tuesday.

NexGard is the first beef-flavored chew to treat fleas and ticks. It has an efficacy of about a month, Sanofi said.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration made a similar decision about six months ago.
