Trash collector Republic Services Inc. (RSG) posted a decline in profit, despite a rise in revenue, in its latest quarter due in part to climbing expenses.

For the three months ended June 30, costs of operations increased 1.4% to $1.4 billion.

The company added that it was hiking its dividend by 2 cents to 32 cents. The dividend is slated to be paid on Oct. 14.

Among the results, revenue for residential collection decreased 1% to $559.8 million, while large-container industrial collection rose 4% and sale of recycled commodities climbed 9.1% to $101.4 million

In all, for the quarter ended June, Republic Services earned $180.8 million, or 52 cents a share, down from $190.3 million, or 54 cents a share, a year earlier. Earnings excluding items were 55 cents a share, up from 54 cents a year ago.

Revenue increased 1.7% to $2.35 billion.

Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters expected earnings of 55 cents a share on revenue of $2.4 billion.

Shares were inactive after-hours Thursday.
