Sleep apnoea is a debilitating disorder affecting many thousands of women:

  • One population-based study estimates the prevalence of moderate-to-severe sleep-disordered breathing affects 23.4% of the female population[1]
  • The number of women aged 20 - 70 years suffering from obstructive sleep apnoea may be as high as 50%[3]
  • As many as 85 - 90% of women may be living with undiagnosed moderate-to-severe OSA[4]

The symptoms of sleep apnoea present differently in women than men and include insomnia, restless legs, fatigue/daytime sleepiness, depression, headaches and muscle pain,[5] and the risk of sleep apnoea may worsen in women during pregnancy[6] and after menopause due to hormonal changes in the body[7]. Women with untreated sleep apnoea are more likely to be diagnosed with diabetes and cardiovascular diseases than women without sleep apnoea,[8] and severe sleep apnoea has been associated with cardiovascular death in women.[9] There are a number of significant gender-related differences in the symptoms and diagnosis of sleep apnoea and such differences require a tailored treatment approach.

Identifying the impact of sleep apnoea on women as an area of high unmet medical need, ResMed has designed a completely integrated sleep solution delivering tailored therapy choices specifically for women. The ResMed Air Solutions connected care platform is an ecosystem of hardware and software solutions designed to improve overall patient care and streamline compliance monitoring and therapy management. Featuring built-in wireless connectivity and advanced comfort technologies, the AutoSet for Her delivers a unique, clinically proven,[2] auto-adjusting algorithm designed to treat mild-to-moderate sleep apnoea in women. To complement the AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her device, is the newly launched range of ultra-light and compact masks, the AirFit for Her offering the perfect fit tailored to the female anatomy.

"Sleep apnoea in women is a serious and growing health concern which needs addressing. In some of our markets where diagnostics require several nights in a laboratory, we observe many discouraged women dropping out before getting tested" said Anne Reiser, ResMed president Europe Asia Pacific. "With so many women now living with sleep apnoea, and many more cases going undiagnosed, we have developed a sleep solution specifically designed for female patients living with this debilitating condition. To coincide with International Women's Day, our range of innovative solutions is now available in many European markets, with the goal of helping women to claim back their lost sleep and get on with their daily lives".

About obstructive sleep apnoea

Obstructive sleep apnoea is a serious condition where the muscles in the throat relax during sleep, causing the sufferer to temporarily stop breathing. If untreated it can occur hundreds of times a night and lead to daytime fatigue as well as more serious health problems.

Sleep apnoea can affect women and men at any age, with or without any other contributing conditions and is often associated with serious conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, heart failure and stroke. However, effective treatment can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases and other comorbidities.
