International stocks trading in New York closed lower on Monday.

The BNY Mellon index of American depositary receipts edged down 0.6% to 146.29. The European index decreased 0.4% to 143.30, the Asian index decreased 1.1% to 155.42, the Latin American index fell 1.1% to 220.61 and the emerging markets index eased 0.8% to 270.99. Alcatel-Lucent (ALU, ALU.FR) and Nokia Corp. (NOK, NOK1V.HE) were among the companies with ADRs that traded actively.

ADRs of Alcatel-Lucent and Nokia rose following a Bloomberg News report that Nokia is in advanced talks to acquire wireless assets of Alcatel-Lucent. Bloomberg News reported an agreement could be reached this week, though no deal has been reached and talks could still fall apart. Alcatel-Lucent rose 7.7% to $4.35 and Nokia increased nearly 3% to $8.30.

Standard & Poor's Ratings Services placed the credit ratings of eight iron ore producers on watch for possible "negative ratings actions" on expectations that "the severe supply and demand imbalance in the iron ore market could continue for the next two years." The credit ratings firm also cut its outlook for iron-ore prices. The companies included Anglo American PLC (AAUKY, AAL.LN), BHP Billiton Ltd. (BHP, BHP.AU), CAP SA (CAP.SN), Eurasian Resources Group, Exxaro Resources Ltd. (EXXAY, EXX.JO), Fortescue Metals Group (FSUGY, FMG.AU), Rio Tinto PLC (RIO, RIO.LN) and Vale SA (VALE, VALE3.BR, VALE5.BR, VALE5.FR). ADRs of BHP Billiton Ltd. fell 4.2% to $43.90 and BHP Billiton PLC (BBL, BLT.LN) decreased 4% to $41.32. Vale declined 2.8% to $5.87 and Rio Tinto dropped 1.2% to $40.96.

ADRs of Petroleo Brasileiro SA (PBR, PETR3.BR, PETR4.BR) rose 3.2% to $8 after a report the Brazilian state-run oil company plans to sell a stake it owns in chemical company Braskem SA (BAK, BRKM5.BR) to raise cash. Braskem ADRs fell four cents to $7.55.

Royal Dutch Shell PLC (RDSA, RDSA.LN) said it has accepted offers for the sale of 185 owned service stations to selected independent dealers for undisclosed sums, and exchanged contracts for 158 of them. The transactions mark the completion of plans the oil titan embarked on last year to reduce the number of Shell company-owned service stations and expand its dealer network. ADRs rose seven cents to $59.80.

Norwegian oil company Statoil ASA (STO, STL.OS) said it has made a second new gas find near the Aasta Hansteen gas project in the Norwegian Sea, which together with a discovery last month could increase the project's recoverable gas volumes by a quarter. ADRs fell 1.2% to $18.80.
