Red Hat’s award-winning Platform-as-a-Service
integrates latest container innovations to accelerate application
development and DevOps from datacenter to cloud
Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world's leading provider of open
source solutions, today announced the general availability of
OpenShift Enterprise 3, the first enterprise-ready web-scale
container application platform based on Docker format Linux
containers, Kubernetes orchestration and Red Hat Enterprise Linux
7, providing full support from the operating system to application
runtimes. OpenShift Enterprise 3, the next-generation of Red Hat's
award-winning Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) offering, helps
organizations accelerate application development and delivery by
enabling development and operations teams to be more agile,
responsive and efficient.
OpenShift Enterprise 3 delivers a container-based application
platform based on Docker and powered by Red Hat Enterprise Linux,
providing a secure, efficient and portable way to develop, deploy
and run application services. This also provides OpenShift users
with access to the broadest ecosystem of packaged application
components, combined with the security and trust delivered by Red
Hat’s Container Certification Program. To orchestrate enterprise
applications that typically span multiple containers and hosts,
OpenShift Enterprise 3 also includes Kubernetes, a powerful,
web-scale, open source, container orchestration and management
engine developed with Google. As a leading contributor to both the
Docker and Kubernetes open source projects, Red Hat is not just
adopting these technologies but actively building them upstream in
the community.
Above this core container infrastructure platform, OpenShift
adds a wide selection of tools for developers to create and
collaborate on application projects, leveraging OpenShift web,
command line, or integrated development environment interfaces.
Developers can push their application code directly from GIT and
automate the Docker image build process using OpenShift’s
innovative source-to-image build capabilities. Developers can also
manage application deployments and rollbacks and integrate with
their existing development and continuous integration tools.
OpenShift Enterprise 3 also includes enterprise middleware services
from the Red Hat JBoss Middleware portfolio including application
container services with Red Hat JBoss Enterprise Application
Platform, Red Hat JBoss Web Server (Tomcat) and messaging services
with Red Hat JBoss A-MQ.
As organizations are expanding their adoption of container-based
application delivery solutions, they need the capacity to deploy,
run, and manage their applications more efficiently and
consistently. This shift towards containerized applications and
immutable infrastructure enables organizations to easily deploy new
microservices-based applications architectures, while also managing
their existing applications across physical, virtual, private and
public cloud environments. OpenShift Enterprise 3 delivers powerful
and fully supported container-based development and deployment
platform for managing these applications across the lifecycle.
Preview OpenShift Dedicated
In addition to the launch of OpenShift Enterprise 3, Red Hat is
announcing the beta of OpenShift Dedicated, a new public cloud
service based on the OpenShift 3 platform. This service builds on
OpenShift Online, Red Hat’s hugely popular public PaaS offering,
hosting more than two and a half million applications since its
launch in November 2011. The new OpenShift Dedicated service
enables businesses to quickly build, launch and host innovative
applications in the public cloud by offering enterprises a
dedicated instance of OpenShift in the public cloud managed
completely by the OpenShift operations team.
New OpenShift Services Enhance the Developer
Experience
Red Hat is adding new courses to its robust selection of
enterprise consulting and training services to assist users and
developers in the transition to OpenShift Enterprise 3. A new
OpenShift Enterprise 3 administrator course can teach customers how
to deploy, configure and manage their OpenShift 3 environment.
Then, when they are ready, they can achieve their certification by
passing the Red Hat Certificate of Expertise in
Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) exam. A new OpenShift Enterprise 3
developer course can show users how to build and deploy
applications and troubleshoot issues on the OpenShift 3 platform.
By introducing tools and methodologies that improve application
lifecycle management, Red Hat Consulting increases productivity by
allowing developers to write applications more quickly, reducing
cycle times, driving automation, and increasing efficiency.
Availability
OpenShift Enterprise 3 is now generally available, with pricing
based on socket and core pair options.
Attend the OpenShift Enterprise 3 Roadshow
The OpenShift team will embark on a global roadshow to showcase
the newest features in OpenShift 3 and host hands-on workshops to
show users the basics of installing an OpenShift 3 environment,
building containers from source code and deploying sample
applications on OpenShift 3. The roadshow will kick off in Raleigh,
N.C. and is slated to visit over twenty cities. Learn more and sign
up for a space at the roadshow.

Ashesh Badani, vice president and general manager, OpenShift,
Red Hat
“This release of OpenShift Enterprise 3 employs open source
containers and orchestration practices to change the developer
experience and move the platform in the direction of what customers
are asking for -- a flexible platform for a microservices
architecture. Our continued upstream work in the Docker and
Kubernetes communities enable us to deliver the most updated
technology platform for developers and operators, enabling them to
remain competitive through quicker innovation.”
Jay Lyman, Research Manager, Cloud Platforms, 451 Research
"As the disruption of application container software continues
to grow, Red Hat is among the earliest and deepest supporters of
the technology, particularly with its focus on enterprise-readiness
for containers in its OpenShift Enterprise 3. With
natively-integrated Docker containers and Kubernetes container
orchestration, Red Hat has fully embraced the trend. Along with its
community and customers, Red Hat is helping to shape best practices
and standards for containers with Openshift Enterprise 3, which
supports container-based application architecture for new,
cloud-native and existing enterprise applications.”
Andrew Myers, general manager, Datacom
"By participating in the OpenShift Enterprise 3 Beta program
Datacom has been able to identify significant benefits of container
technology and how to easily embrace the DevOps methodology within
our current practices. OpenShift by Red Hat provides an easy to use
Platform-as-a-Service experience, and we see clear benefit to our
customers by allowing easy management of the entire development
lifecycle from the early development stages all the way to
production deployment."
Dr. Andre Engelbertz, Digital Division, T-Systems International
GmbH
"Our variety of customers and end users in health and industry
service required a robust platform that could manage an
application's entire lifecycle over multiple datacenters. Adding
OpenShift Enterprise to our Red Hat Enterprise Linux deployment
allowed us to bring control and visibility into our
Platform-as-a-Service environment with support we could trust. Now
our customers can easily move into the cloud, allowing migration
and development innovation to happen faster and with more
flexibility."
