International stocks trading in New York closed lower Tuesday,
with the Bank of New York index of American depositary receipts
shedding 0.3% to 150.93. The European index dropped 0.1% to 152.18,
the Asian index fell 0.5% to 143.58, the Latin America index fell
1.5% to 256.15, and the emerging markets index declined 1.1% to
260.85. Among the companies with shares that actively traded were
Randgold Resources Ltd. (GOLD, RRS.LN) and Koninklijke Philips N.V.
(PHG, PHIA.AE).
Gold-mining company Randgold has started commissioning the
sulphide circuit at the Kibali gold mine in the Democratic Republic
of Congo, Chief Executive Mark Bristow said Tuesday at the BMO
Global Metals and Mining Conference. "While the plant processes ore
from the open pit mine, the underground mine is still being
developed and has just accessed the first underground ore," Mr.
Bristow said. Shares slipped 0.9% to $80.41.
Koninklijke Philips N.V. (PHG, PHIA.AE) said Tuesday that green
product sales reached 11.8 billion euros ($16.19 billion) in 2013
and now represent 51% of overall sales, reaching its EcoVision
target two years ahead of schedule. The Dutch medical and
electronics firm said all sectors contributed to the growth of
green--or environmentally friendly--products. The health-care
division expanded its portfolio with 13 new products that improve
patient outcomes, provide more value and expand access to care.
Shares edged down 0.2% to $34.83.
Barclays PLC (BCS, BARC.LN) is shutting down its U.S. and
European power trading desks, continuing an exit from the market
begun last year while it fights a $435 million market-manipulation
claim by U.S. regulators. Shares fell 0.5% to $17.22.
Research-based biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca PLC (AZN,
AZN.LN) said the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved orphan
drug Myalept. Still, shares dropped 0.4% to $67.79.
