A spokesman for China's ministry of foreign affairs said
Thursday that he isn't aware of any information on alleged cyber
attacks from China on U.S. oil firms.
"I'm not aware of the information, but as for these types of
reports, we see them quite often," Ma Zhaoxu, a spokesman for the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said at a regular news briefing on
Thursday. Ma was responding to a report by cyber security firm
McAfee Inc. (MFE), adding that he thinks "there is nothing new in
it."
McAfee issued a report on Thursday that said hackers who appear
to be based in China have conducted a "coordinated, covert and
targeted" campaign of cyber espionage against major Western energy
firms. McAfee confirmed that five multinational firms were
targeted, but declined to name the companies.
