A security chief at Massey Energy Co.'s (MEE) Upper Big Branch mine in West Virginia pleaded not guilty Tuesday to federal charges of disposing of thousands of pages of documents, the Associated Press reported.

Hughie Elbert Stover, who entered his plea before a U.S. magistrate judge in Beckley, W.Va., is accused of lying to federal investigators and ordering another Massey employee to dispose of documents relating to security at the mine.

Stover is the first person facing criminal charges in connection with the April 2010 explosion at Upper Big Branch that killed 29 miners.

The explosion remains the subject of a federal grand jury probe and civil investigations.

Massey, based in Richmond, Va., has denied wrongdoing.
